You are right... I started a Windows Download and the processor speeds jumped up to 1.5-2.0 ghz

ETA: I switched the power mode to High Performance and now it is no longer lagging; working like a charm.

I always thought the power options were solely for battery usage. Had no clue it was for processor/CPU performance.

ETAA: Holy shite this thing is fast now. I don't even need to install the SSD I ordered for her. I may just wait a couple years until this hydrid HD starts to get bogged down, then install the Samsung Evo 840 I bought

If you have the SSD, might as well install it now, unless you have some other use for it.

They are solely for battery usage, but obviously your CPU and GPU are going to be the biggest battery hogs, hence the power-saving features.
