Is getting an iPad Air/iPad mini 2 right now a bad investment?

I'm thinking hard on getting one of these but am wondering how long I'll be able to use it before it's considerably outdated. I was gifted an original iPad mini and took it back because it was just to slow. The original mini has an A5 chip while the Air and Mini 2 have the A7 chip. The Air 2 has an A8 chip. Should I be comfortable about purchasing the Air/Mini 2 right now or consider strongly about the Air 2?

Why does it matter if it becomes outdated? You buy a device for a use. As long as you use it and it does the job, it serves it's purpose.

I'm still using an iPad 2. Sure it's slower than the new stuff, but it still works fine for email and web surfing.

Mac rumors lists all Apple products and where they are in their life cycle. It gives you buying recommendations based on release trends, corporate announcements, and of course rumors.
It also lets you know if new updates will be a game changer or just fluff.

To oversimplify the issue: the difference in price between an air and air 2 is ~$100, right? And the air 2 has a year's worth of newer processors and double the ram. So, would you pay $100 to be able to use your gadget for an additional year? Only you can answer that. I have an air 1 and it is light years faster than the iPad 2 it replaced.
