To a certain extent yes. To the extent of getting them to their destination safely, it is the airline's responsibility.

Have no clue. I don't know the rules if its a flight where you don't leave the plane.

I guess the solution is for the passenger to notify the airline that he/she is not boarding the next flight.

There are always passengers connecting to different flights. I have never seen everyone forced to stay on a plane that makes a stop.

Sure, except that the article evens says, "Carriers are likely to freeze the frequent-flier accounts or travelers who use the technique or to strip them of miles, said Petersen, who is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado."

If you aren't a frequent flier, I guess no big loss.
