Mossberg makes a 410 semi - youth that you can add a butt extension (comes with gun) that makes it a regular youth gun. It's a pump but comes with a long plug which makes it a single shot. When your comfortable - cut the plug.
This.
It's called Mossberg Model 500 Super Bantam (this is the one we bought). They also have one called Mini-Bantam. Both weigh around 5 pounds, and both have removable shims in the stock to shorten the length of pull.
I never found a single shot .410 that weighed as little as this pump.

I have an H&R 410 crack barrel and a 20 gauge crack barrel youth models my father gave me at 8 and 10. I still shoot squirrel with the 410 and I keep the 20 in my toolbox of my truck. Great guns. I believe Remington bought them out.
As a man in his 50's to shoot a squirrel with a gun his father gave him at the age of 8 it's a special feeling I can assure you. Get him the 410 now and the 20 later. No reason he can't grow up with both. I've got more my father gave me at various ages that when I shoot bring me back to that particular time in my life. And that's always a good thing.
