On the morning of October 27, a U-2F (the third CIA U-2A, modified for air-to-air refueling) piloted by USAF Major Rudolf Anderson, departed its forward operating location at McCoy AFB, Florida. At approximately 12:00 pm EDT, the aircraft was struck by a S-75 Dvina (NATO designation SA-2 Guideline) SAM missile launched from Cuba. The aircraft was shot down and Anderson was killed.

Engine is on display at the museum of the revolution.

Or Castro's letter that endorses using nuclear weapons against the USA?

quote:

"I believe the imperialists' aggressiveness is extremely dangerous and if they actually carry out the brutal act of invading Cuba in violation of international law and morality, that would be the moment to eliminate such danger forever through an act of clear legitimate defense, however harsh and terrible the solution would be," Castro wrote.

I'm not always great at Google. Has Castro (who is still alive) apologized for his role in the potential incineration of almost every American in the 1960's?

History will be kind to most nations who threaten to, or even strive to gain a nuclear weapon. Why? Because only one country has ever used them, threats be damned, and they are the good guys.

So. Apologize for potentially thousands of dead Americans? Or dead Japanese?

funny story about that. he made so much noise about this that at one point the Soviets sent a delegation to Havana and gave him a detailed presentation on the effects of the nuclear winter on cuba if the USSR were to launch a nuclear strike against the US. After this presentation he never publicly called for such a strike again.

I can only imagine the bloodbath had American been forced to invade Japan. Would have made D-Day look like a walk in the park I believe.

Sure. Maybe even some weapons seized from the Bay of Pigs.

There is a shot down US bomber on display in Hanoi.

Should we have let that stop the normalization of relations with Vietnam?

And hell, we shouldn't be playing nice with Germany or Japan either for that matter.
And why are we trading with Saudi and China, but not Cuba?

Who knows. But I'm sure that you can visit the museum in Israel which proudly has on display tattered rafts from the USS Liberty.

Are Americans allowed to visit Japan or Germany? Or how about the wreckage of our downed aircraft in Vietnam

The wartime leaders of those countries are still alive, exert control, and are unrepentant?

I've never been comfortable with the idea that only US or US allies should be able to defend themselves. If we invaded a country I would expect that country to respond against us with everything they got.

Waitwaitwait, we should ostracize a nation for saying it would retaliate with nukes if we physically invaded them? You serious, Clark?

Can US citizens visit Japan or islands from the Pacific campaign in WW2? Can they visit Germany? Italy? Vietnam?
