Well the biggest difference is that a member who has "retired in good standing" is that they leave behind most the obligations they had to the club but retain certain privileges like having access to the club house or being invited to take part in what club functions they can. Usually for a member to qualify to be retired in good standing they will have to have been a member for a set period of time, a minimum 10 years is the norm and be in good standing with the club at the time of retirement.
