IMO established message boards (especially tight knit ones) are the best. Be it local outdoor/hunting boards, brand-specific gun boards, etc.

You'll get fairer pricing, and you can easily vet folks (10k post guys who've sold 50 guns on the forum aren't going to disappear with you money). Also, the dedicated posters are generally capable firearms users and take good care of their stuff. You can also find a lot of harder to find stuff on brand specific boards.

i'll second this. although for the record, i live in california and we have the strictest gun laws, and for legal reasons(many of the gun laws don't apply to private party transfers) its actually more advantageous to purchase a used gun from another person. so my opinion might be skewed because i actually would prefer to buy a used gun even when a new gun is the same price.

I almost never buy a new gun. In fact, the last new gun I bought was my 9mm Shield. I love shotguns and find most of mine at pawn shops. If you do your research and know what you're looking for you can find some good deals. I've gotten some good deals from armslist.com also. Some guys refuse to ship guns though. I guess they don't want to fool with the FFL process. Generally find better prices there than on Gunbroker. Just my experience anyway.
