I think it just means that when we are 1st and 10 from our own 20 there is very little confidence that we will score. Start off at half field and you feel good about a field goal. Get a turnover on their 20 and you get hopeful for a TD.

It also seems that in the first half of games Les Miles seems to have more concern for ramming the ball into other teams' defenses in order to win some war of attrition rather than using misdirection and exploiting the weaknesses of other teams.
