Gary Patterson
Art Briles
Kirby Smart
Best list so far, just switch Smart with Briles for two spot though.
Baylor's inattentiveness to Defense is a stain on Briles' resume from Joe Alleva and other LSU potential hiring staffers' viewpoints.
The other two are from winning programs that have played exceptional defense em route to their success, and merit a look as a potential hire here.
Our defense is that of legends and our recruits come because they know that they will leave as players well suited to perform well in NFL systems not too dissimilar from that of ours. We need a coach that understands and embraces that, rather than one who may neglect it.
Will say this too though, I think there are NFL assistants that would have ears perking up about an opening here... Defensive coordinators specifically...

If Miles leaves (which I don't believe will happen)...
You need to find a successful coach who has done more with less talent (despite recruiting well for their current programs capabilities) and develops a good culture around the program
I posted the below in another thread, and in my opinion is the correct course of action...
LSU should make Mark Dantonio, and/or Gary Pinkel say no to a good offer. These two would probably be tough, but possible.
Then approach Todd Graham and/or Gary Patterson with a good offer.
#1 priority once one of these 4 is locked up is to retain Frank Wilson... should be written in the new coaches contract or understood during negotiations.

no way id put smart above briles, in fact id easily have briles #1. baylor was absolute dogshit when briles got there, now they are one of the most explosive offensive teams every year. patterson is good, but tcu was solid before he got there(under francione). smart is a complete unknown, plenty of people think he is just a puppet for saban. not to mention saban's other defensive protege fell flat on his face at a high profile job.
after years and years of miles' bland offensive style, you guys wouldn't want to see what briles could do?
