I'll amend my "scratch guns w/ external safeties" comment to add the following (which I was already presuming): "unless the Op's GF is are going to practice a lot with her handgun."

I have seen lots of people forget to disengage their gun's safety at handgun matches. Under stress, people revert to their training and/or to strongly ingrained habits.

1. Most women do not practice much -- if any.

2. If she isn't going to practice, she really should have a "point & shoot" gun. (Unless you or she is gonna fiddle with the gun, and I think I covered that in my first post).

3. And since both guns should have similar operating controls and similar manuals of arms, neither should have an external safety.

Regarding the subsequent suggestions that you get .45 ACP's -- ignore that, too. The people telling you about the "bigger holes" are referring to holes in paper targets. Today's really good 9mm ammo makes significantly bigger holes in people than does the average .45 h.p. round. And as was pointed out, most CCW handguns will hold fewer .45 rounds than 9mm rounds.

Finally -- quit looking for advice on an internet forum. Most of us know very little about self-defense handguns, and some of us know a lot less than that.

I'm with you. Most women will actually carry their pistol in their purse. Have you ever looked in one of those things? There is shite EVERYWHERE! Even in a holster, I vote a pistol with a safety. I love my P238 and P938. Great guns. Get HER comfortable with it. What you think about her carry gun means nothing. She needs to be comfortable and well practiced with it.
