At 2:37 AM I timed eight (8) sequential one (1) minute intervals and noted the number of votes which were added for each such period:
Time Votes Change
2:37AM - 19725 +0 (start)
2:38AM - 19747 +22
2:39AM - 19771 +24
2:40AM - 19795 +24
2:41AM - 19815 +20
2:42AM - 19839 +24
2:43AM - 19864 +25
2:44AM - 19886 +22
2:45AM - 19910 +24
In other words, there's an almost identical number of votes being added to the user's total with each passing minute--all just after 2:30 AM--exactly as there is right now.
If we dont beat a machine now, we will be beating a machine for BJ in the finals. (didnt mean that to sound like BJ used one)
Lets get Eric a win now.

I just timed it and yea Hunter is getting 22-24 votes every minute consistently. Dude is botting his arse off.

I have no clue how those "bots" work, can someone explain the premise? Are they only useful for an application such as this?
Posted on 12/16/14 at 5:11 pm to bossflossjr
We didn't use any machines FYI. If someone else did, then we can't help it. But we specifically asked people not to use them. Look at the thread title for gods sake.

My cynical guess: HunterBot's owner is using a workplace connection. It's getting past 5:00, and the Botmaster is pausing to make sure his computer(s) will run unabated overnight before he leaves for the day.

There are a couple of kinds. There are some super technical ones that connect to the site's servers and push through hundreds or thousands of votes in a short period of time. That's likely what VinnyBot was using when he was busted. Then, there's a much less elegant approach where the needed mouse and keyboard commands are strung together into a small program that will just do them over and over. Basically like you were sitting at your computer and doing it yourself--except you're not. Someone with a dozen computers and a decently fast connection could do some damage this way. Otherwise, it's really not much more advantageous than just having a couple of extra folks voting. Actually, voting by hand would be faster in most cases because the user can see when it's time to click versus the bot which cannot.

I always have to preface my posts because I hope and think that Cocomo had no knowledge of bots and he was definitely vocal about not using them, but someone was using them for BJ. I don't care if a whole office of people were up at 3am voting, he was getting a ridiculous number of votes in the wee hours for several nights. At this point though, who cares. If everyone is using them and Bud Light obviously doesn't care, use them up.

quote:I noticed Eric's lead starting to dwindle, so I went ahead with a look at the pattern of HunterBot's persistent voting as done before. Again, it was an eight (8) minute test with vote totals taken each minute.

Time | Voting | Change
9:17P | 45,563 | 0 (start)
9:18P | 45,594 | +31
9:19P | 45,623 | +29
9:20P | 45,656 | +33
9:21P | 45,687 | +31
9:22P | 45,716 | +29
9:23P | 45,748 | +29
9:24P | 45,778 | +30
9:25P | 45,809 | +31
For the same time period, Eric's per-minute vote totals ranged from a low of 17 to a high of 31--numbers which seemingly reflect the sporadic nature of in-person voting.

His lead continues to grow at a pretty decent clip. The OT (OBO Eric) is putting up anywhere from 9 to 21 per minute in the same periods. So, he's outpacing our votes at a clip of nearly 2 to 1.

Eric up to 55K. Meanwhile, Hunter (Botman) just eclipsed a 3,500 advantage (58,518).
BJ is still fine--sitting on a 6,540 to 133 lead over Terry.

So I see you did another random check last night. Hunterbot last night was at around 30 per minute. The night before was around 24. Is that something he can dictate? Can he say that at night I want it at 30 per minute and during the day I want it at 16?

quote:My guess is that he has set up somewhere around five computers to run an automatic voting script. If each computer produced 6 votes per minute, that would yield the 30 votes per minute that he's getting. He could either take some of the computers offline during the day, or he could modify the script to slow the per-machine voting. As I mentioned in a prior post, such a script would be fairly easy to implement. It would just automate and repeat the actual steps a user takes to cast a single vote: Click, Wait, Refresh, Wait, and then repeat.
Is that something he can dictate?
In order to account for variations in internet speed, the actual steps would likely be slowed down a little from what a human could do, but it would certainly be possible to go through the process in 10 seconds (which is what it would require for 5 computers to get 30 votes per minute). The downside to using a script like this would be that the computer could not be simultaneously used for other things--its mouse and keyboard would be tied up by the script functions. So, for instance, if someone had an office computer left unused overnight, s/he could let it run the script while the office was closed and then take the script offline during the day so the computer could be used for its intended purpose.
Or, at least that's how SWIM believes such a setup could be implemented.
