The child isn't supposed to touch the Elf and I'm not into trying to come up with funny facebook pictures the little guy can get into so we move him to a new place each night that my daughter can easily find the next day, but can't reach or touch.

I threaten my 6yo that I'm going to touch the elf if he doesn't start acting right.

Yea last week my 10 year old an I were sitting in the deer stand, he says, dad does mom really think that I believe that stupid elf leaves the house every night an goes to the north pole? Felt it was time to ask, well do you really believe Santa delivers presents all over the world in one night? Just told him don't ruining it for your mom an sister. End of conversation.

I think at this point it's moved past "fad" and is pretty well ingrained. Our first elf came when my son was a preschooler or maybe in Kindergarten (not really sure which) and now he's 13 and helping me and his mother put them out every night for his little sister.

Sounds a lot like how things went with my son. When he was 11 we suspected he no longer believed. We pretty well knew last year when he was 12 that he had figured it all out but nobody said anything about it and he didn't ask. Now this Christmas it's fully out in the open between him and us that he knows what's what. He is doing good though helping us keep it going for his sister who is only 6 yrs old herself.

That's actually a pretty big deal for a parent and their kid, especially the oldest kid. Nothing says "they're no longer a little child" than when they no longer believe in Santa. It's kind of bittersweet I guess. On the one hand you're proud they're growing up but on the other hand you know they only get to be a little kid once in their life and once that time is over, they cannot go back.

Kinda like the transition you feel after you kill someone for the first time.

The elves at my house are not the creepy looking Elf on a Shelf though. They look like this...

Us too, Darth.

Our kids write a letter to Santa asking if he can send an elf to us to live with us. So they can play with him, etc, and at night they give him a snack and water. He then gets into "mischief." There's no behavior control, no "no touching" rules, no "he's going to tell Santa you are being an a-hole." It's just fun and imaginative for them.

My three year old is already challenging me on the physics behind the rules of the Elf and Santa. Sometimes I feel like he is already just pretending to believe us because he feels sorry for us trying so hard and/or we won't buy him presents if he doesn't act like he believes. I swear as I'm telling him about the Elf flying to the North Pole each night he has this "yeah, whatever Dad" look on his face.

That's pretty much exactly how it is at our house. They show up on the night of Thanksgiving and stay until Santa takes them home to the North Pole on Christmas Eve night. During the day our daughter plays with them and when she goes to bed she sprinkles them with the snowflakes and they do their thing while she sleeps.

We got one 5 years ago when my son was 3. His two sisters were 10 and 8 at the time. Now my son is 8 and he has a 4 year old sister. Those two think it's real and are excited still. The other two just help us move it around if we forget. We take a firm stand on the mis-behaving Elf concept though. Like the other guy said....why let that Elf supposedly trash your house and do things you would punish the kids for? My older girl had a friend over this past Saturday to spend the night and she is from a home where the elf does annoying shite. She and my daughter dumped a whole bag of flour on my kitchen table to show him doing snow angels while we were asleep. Pissed me off and I cleaned that up before my younger ones woke. Our Elf does what he was designed to do...sit on the damn shelf and engage in behavior modification a month out of the year.
