These are all good points so far, and I guess its difficult to judge which game was louder between ole miss/bama, I just recall there being a few crucial moments where the stadium needed to get loud, which it was, but that I was able to hear people talking next to me unlike some of the louder games in the past. To reiterate though, I don't believe the towels/pom poms/cowbells/whatever directly cause anyone to win or lose. But I do think that clapping+yelling is undoubtedly louder than towel twirling+yelling, and anything that can be done to make Death Valley as hostile an environment as possible (within realistic bounds) should be considered. It might look really cool on TV, be fun to be like the Steelers, and apparently may even cause a select few to yell louder as mentioned above. But I think as a whole (at least in the student section), the towels do more harm than good other than possibly distracting the field goal kickers.

Do any of the older fans remember towels being placed in the stadium other than the last decade or so? Or is this a new "big game" tradition?

Towels are fricking stupid, and are a hop skip and a jump away from those awful pom-poms the Black Bears/War Eagles/Gumps use.

But what everyone forgets to mention is that companies PAY the AD to put their name/logo on the towels and place them throughout the stadium.

What are the odds LSU voluntarily shuts down a revenue stream? Absolutely 0. So get used to the damn towels.

Jesus. The towels or lackthereof has nothing to do with winning or losing games. Nothing.

in the real old days, they use to give out paper shakers on wood sticks but mostly just to the student section or road games. When Everybodys All American was filming, the movie crew gave out shakers to the entire stadium. The purple and gold shakers turned to just gold plastic shakers in the 90s and were sometimes given out to the student section only and sometimes to the whole lower level. Towels came about in the 2000s

How do towels lower the noise level? People just wave the towel instead of yelling?

clapping and yelling is significantly louder than waving a towel and yelling

I don't think he's hatin'. He was questioning what contribution do the towels make to TS's atmosphere. IMO, they contribute nothing. They may take away from noise 'cause if you're waving them stoopid tow'ls then you ain't yelling as effectively as you otherwise could. And as a minimum they are a distraction.

TS is known for nights & noise, not pom-poms, towels, or white-outs.

Leave the towels at home, make an acoustic cup with your hands about your mouth, and yell from your diaphragm. Alleva needs to hire me in the worst kinda way.

The OP and all his Ilk that are "Intimidated" by Towels and Pom Poms at games in Tiger Stadium need to seek Psychological/Psychiatric help from a competent Terran Psychologist or Psychiatrist. They look good on TV when the entire stadium is waving them. Doesn't effect the sound level at all. We think most Terran's have the ability to yell loud and wave a towel at the same time. Maybe the OP is one of those that are not evolved enough, mentally or physically, to do both at the same time.

OP clearly said that waving a towel takes away clapping.

Does it look good on TV? Yes

Does it affect sounds level? Yes

So it has its benefit and a slight drawback my limiting your ability to clap

I was at both games, and hands down with out a doubt the Ole Miss game was twice as loud. It was absolutely electric in the stadium for the Ole Miss game has to be in my top 5 game experiences ever (pro or college) my tickets are in lower south east corner and there were no towels for Ole Miss game, but they were there for Bama game. I never really thought about the towels being the cause for noise levels, to me it just seemed like the people around me were no where near excited about the game as they were for the Ole Miss game... Noticing the towels is a good observation though. I'm with you on this one though I'd rather have rowdy hyped up clapping fans than having fans twirling towels any day of the week!

What kind of idiot claps on third down or after a score when theyre trying to make noise other than women?

Clapping is what you do after you settle for a FG or recognize an injured player standing up, not what you do when you want to make noise. Unless some of you morons are eating the towels or shakers, they should have no impact on the noise level.

Ole Miss was not louder. The towels weren't a problem in the slightest. We wouldn't have won had we not had the towels. Would've been the same result. Plus, a ton of people like them.

So is it louder to clap and yell OR cup hands around mouth and yell? I think we need a government grant to find out.

I thought the towels were for spilled drinks.

Obviously, the vast majority of fans like the towels for whatever reason because most of the stadium was waving them. If they don't like them, the fans can ignore the towels, throw them on the ground or wipe their azzes with them. They're not bringing them from home. It's one game a year usually. Not a big deal... Nobody is forcing the fans to pick the towels up and wave them.

I don't think there is any significant impact on the noise level because I rarely see anyone clapping while screaming on third downs when I'm in the stadium. Everybody just usually yells (though people were stomping on the bleachers as well at times during the Bama game). They usually clap after nice plays. And like I said, two of the top 10 loudest games in the history of Tiger Stadium (according to just about everyone) had towels (2012 Bama and 2000 Tennessee). They didn't impact the noise too much because I don't think you can get much louder than that. SVP from ESPN said he had never seen or heard anything like the 2012 Bama game. Towels or no towels, Tiger Stadium can be extremely loud when it wants to be.
