Really, the best part of the lightsaber design, which y'all seem to be missing, is that it looks unstable as all hell. It's not the crisp, clean ray of light it usually is in the other moving, it looks more like arcing electricity. Which speaks to an evil character who does not have formal training and is probably on the fringes of society, not backed by the empire.

I think the ghetto saber is sort of the point. It's telling us something about the character, as that it is one jacked up lightsaber even without the hilt.

I love the more lived in design, going back to the original series. The prequels were too clean. The Star Wars universe was clunky and dirty. It felt lived in.

And I had a nerdgasm upon seeing the Falcon. Couldn't help it. God help me, I'm back in.

Or Abrams is just going for a "realistic/gritty" lightsaber

They could have made it unpolished and not made it pointless. Don't excuse that stupidity.

I could go with that but could the lightsaber also be arcing because it's making contact with and melting the snow?

I like the concept of a novice Sith not knowing how to make a lightsaber but Luke built one with just a year or two of on and off training so if this guy is having trouble making one, he's in for a monster arse kicking once he runs into Luke.

But maybe based on some of the rumors, that's going to be the end result: this dude causes havoc all throughout the movie until Luke takes him to (get your arse kicked) school near the end of the movie.
