Shooter has been a golfer his whole life, putting in the time, busting his arse. Then here comes this a-hole Happy and he thinks he runs the show and he had been playing golf for a month. Shooter tries to initiate him into the boys club with a friendly prank and Happy threatens to slice him open with a broken bottle.

He drove him to the edge and Shooter snapped. Its a tragic ending.

All I know is Julie Bowen is even hotter when she's wearing lingerie. Especially when carrying a couple of pitchers of beer.

Nope. Shooter was an a-hole from the get go.

I thought the same thing about Billy Zane's character in Titanic. Dude gets his gold digging woman and his big arse diamond stolen from him. On top of that, the dude is on a ship going down, taking most of his valuables with it.

It wasn't Happy's fault that Shooter wasn't equipped to deal with the Bubba Watson power and Phil Mickelson shot-making ability of Happy.

Shooter's gold jacket hubris was his tragic downfall, and doesn't have enough redeeming qualities to be our hero.

Now this I agree with.

Agreed. I pull for Shooter. He has put in the time and work to get where he is. Happy comes in with this unorthodox quirky swing and carries himself on the course like a complete buffoon... slamming clubs, cussing, getting in fights. It's ridiculous.

Mr. Larson is the antagonist, from start to finish.

This is derivative of Barney Stinson thinking that Billy Zabka was actually the protagonist in Karate Kid.

I couldn't pull for a guy who speaks in the 3rd person like Shooter.

There are plenty of guys on the tour who "put in the work" and aren't able to put on the gold jacket. Shooter is an old timer on the tour, and although he was the favorite in that tour championship, that just means he probably blew it in years past. He's not new to the game. Shooter needs to learn to handle himself. Can't beat Happy on the course, so he has to resort to mental (and eventually physical) tactics in order to defeat his new nemesis. Shooter is undeserving of being the tour champion. And why are there no other contenders on the tour until a hockey player shows up?

Happy also cheated his arse off in the final round as well. He took 8 swings to get out of the rough alone on hole 16, and he carded only a bogie 5. Should have been at least a 15 on that hole, putting him out of contention

There's a bunch on here with some hella strong arguments that mox is actually the antagonist in varsity blues. I wish I could find some of those posts, they're gold.

Shooter could have been an ok guy all the way up until he bought Happy's grandmother's house at auction so he could turn Happy's bedroom into his trophy room.

In Barney's defense, the "hero" of that story is a total douche.

Shooter is really the best thing about Happy Gilmore. He's a metaphor for the Educated/Hardworking American, that gets everything he worked for stripped away by a moronic/slacker...It really can be looked at on a level of how America is today. The lowest common denominator is celebrated these days, and hardworking jacks get stiffed because Intelligence is a dying breed
