Not the poster, but there is a school of thought out there that a naturally-occurring segment of homosexuality within a population lowers the aggressive tendencies of the overall population, effectively putting a leash on a potentially self-destructive tendencies of the males. This segment still has the male capabilities of aiding the group while not competing for mates.

Whether or not something is an illness has to do with it's impact on the individual, not the biology or genetics involved.
