re: Which QB Was Better?

Was the Florida game that year a factor into that?
Was it more or less a factor than this year's AU game?
Keep in mind, I'm not defending either...I was on record at the time saying that I wanted Nick to turn the reigns over to Russell after the Oregon State comeback win in the rain where it was clear he was the best option.
I'd also prefer to have seen Harris this whole time for a host of reasons.
In Saban's case, he did not...and one could ALMOST call his behavior, um...stubborn. In fact, Nick had th audacity to chastise a local media outlet for DARING to run with an online poll asking fans which QB THEY though should start!! Oh...and here's the best part...fans rallied around his point of view and called out the media outlet! Imagine Les Miles doing something like that and getting fan support...
But if we're going to bitch about Les not playing the guy that's obviously better, why is pointing out that we had a similar situation back in 2004 that was handled similarly as poorly?

From the above, you can credibly argue that Randall > Jennings and yet Russell got at least 4x the playing time that Harris is getting.
I'm not arguing which got more PT...I know the answer. I'm arguing that in neither case were the reigns handed over to the guy most feel/felt was the better option. In the end, both seasons saw who most feel/felt was the stud left in the barn and not getting the most playing time possible for the next year and beyond.
Why is one coach crucified for this decision while the other gets a pass in retrospect?

"Why is one coach crucified for this decision while the other gets a pass in retrospect?"
The vast difference in how the two coaches treated the situation is a part of it. Russell play a lot and in "real" situations. Russell was also allowed to implode (Florida) but continue to receive significant playing time, laying the groundwork for his development. I would be more than pleased had Harris received something similar to the PT Russell received in 2004.

Which QB Was Better?
Having watched them all
JJ
MR
AH
AJ
JJ had more physical talent than MR and as a SR, MR was probably better than JJ as a senior because JJ regressed.
Hatch had the least physical tools but has to be rated over AJ because for God's sake, AJ seems to have literally NO IDEA prior to the snap of what is coming. You simply can't discount that in NO GAME WHATSOEVER has AJ managed a completion rate as respectable as AH's. And yeah, Hatch sucked.
That's how bad this is. If we could get AJ to play as well as Hatch did, it would be a SIGNIFICANT upgrade.

Zach Lee was better

EXACTLY!
JR threw 73 passes while MR threw 102. JR appeared in ELEVEN games!
AND, MR completed 63% of his fricking passes. He wasn't good, but he wasn't a goddamned train wreck.

I'd be more pleased, but I'd still consider both seasons to have been wasted in terms of developing the future. Think back after the Oregon St game and how obvious it was JR was the guy and how frustrated fans were every time Marcus came onto the field. The biggest difference was the moral authority Saban possesed that Miles has never had to tel fans to go get bent and allow him to coach the team.

but wait. he was a senior QB under Nick Saban. I thought bad QB play was a Miles inability to develop QBs thing?
Saban only signed three QBs from 2000-02 - Marcus Randall, Ricky Clausen (or one of those Clausen brothers) and Lester Richard. Somehow Jimbo & Saban thought that would be adequate to address depth & talent at the QB position. Russell & Flynn were the only solid QB prospects signed during Saban's tenure.

Anthony Jennings is the worst on the list

And yet Nick still would not play Russell over him. Talk about mismanaging the QB situation and not playing the younger guy with eyes on the future.
Little Nicky did have his eyes on the future, just not ours

quote:Um, Saban was hired in 2000 on the heels of near collapse at LSU so, um, 2000 recruiting was a "be happy you got someone" kinda year. Hell, Saban ARRIVED in fricking NOVEMBER! Not exactly ahead of the curve for the 2000 class. AND, we had Davey on the team. Actual SABAN recruiting started in 2001 and even then, we were a team with an "OK" winning season after implosion.

But, even then, 3 whole F'n years of real Saban recruiting, he got us a #1 overall pick and a guy who is STILL in the NFL that brought us to a MNC.
Are your really attempting some sort of equating here? Cause, um.........fail.

What About Matt Mauck?

So, we are at the point of who is the worst of the worst? Good God man.

Sitting in the formation we are running for the entirety of the play clock giving the Defense time to figure out which of our 5 plays we are running isn't helping any QB we put out there.

Team Hatch right here
Posted on 11/18/14 at 3:13 pm to Mike Linebacker
I can't believe at one point, our head coach thought Andrew Hatch was good enough to start.
Jefferson's 2009 season was the best in that list, but he got worse in 2010.

What About Matt Mauck?
Saban recruited Mauck while he was at Michigan State. Mauck played baseball, didn't make it. Then he called Saban and asked if he could play for him at LSU.
Technically, Saban only signed two solid QB prospects at LSU.
