It's not really unknown. At the outset of symptoms the virus is barely detectable in the blood. In the US someone with suspected contact showing symptoms would still be treated and would get a second and 3rd blood test over the next 24-48 hours. I have no idea why the second test took 4 days in his case.... perhaps just overwhelming lab workers with high volume in West Africa.

Sure it is if you can't pinpoint the day he became positive. Whether it be a wrong diagnosis the first time or not, four days later he's positive. Where in that time in between the two diagnosis would you feel safe to have intimate contact with someone as in this case?
