Havent checked my cameras, but the last week they have stopped. Is it because of acorns? Action around? I've heard the neighbor shoot but not much else and no pressure from me. FWIW I'm hunting on 100 acres bordered by a creek with 2 different landowners bordering it so I know the deer move in and out since I have a small tract. Lot of hardwood in East Feliciana.

I'm just trying to figure this out since I'm primarily a wing shooter.

Yep
That's what I'm seeing. Still getting one every now & then that will eat some corn but most just walk right by the feeders.
Also seen a buck checking the feeders to see if does was around I guess.

So should I not put anymore corn out ? Will they come back to the corn later in the season or no?

They'll come back once the acorns dry up. Happens every time we have a good acorn crop. You could probably stop for the next couple of weeks if you want to save money on the corn, but by mid December they will be back looking for a food source.

I'm keeping the feeders full & did have 2 yesterday evening come back to one. Also as I stated above the bucks will usually check them out from a distance to see if the does are there

What I've seen in the past is they will get better later in the season

Interesting. I have rice bran out too.

So keep feeding them huh? Speaking of that how many times a day, what times and duration should I set my feeders? I have them now at 6 am and 4:30 pm for 7 seconds. But I just guessed at that. 7 seconds gives a pretty good bit of corn out.

Good. Thanks. Great information here. As I said I'm primarily a wingshhoter but bought this place and am determined to learn how to manage it. I got a late start but will work hard towards getting it completely ready for next year.

Another question. I diced up some areas and put out a rye, clover mix, not sure of the name. Only got it out a month ago so hope this rain will make it come out but clover seems to be coming out pretty good. Someone told me (actually a few people) to sow chicory. Any thoughts on this? Also should I put any salt or mineral blocks out now and if so where? Away from the feeder or by it?

You'll want to put your mineral blocks out in very early spring - this is when antlers are growing and also when most does have dropped their fawns. I put my minerals out along established deer travel areas.

ETA - I use Trophy Blocks. They're more expensive but deer seem to prefer them compared to the $6 mineral blocks from the feed store.

They are hitting the oaks right now from what I have seen.I hunt in SW Miss and had 10 deer under one big oak yesterday afternoon. There is a feeder about 40 yards from that tree and they totally ignored it.The acorns will be gone in a few weeks and the plots will get some activity.

Great. Hopefully a bit of rain today will allow my plots to grow a bit.

For next season, mineral blocks in spring, disc plots, plant when? Beginning of September?

What else can I do in off season to prepare?

Also since I'm asking a bunch of questions, I need to set up a cleaning station. I'd like to pour about a 10' x 10' concrete pad with drain in middle, four post with a metal roof to hang the deer. Any suggestions on set up? I have access to water and power so will have a table one one side, sink, hose bib, lights and outlets. I need an electric hoists too. Someone told me put an eye bolt in the slab to secure the deers head when hanging.

Any thoughts or ideas on this?

Mineral licks would be a good start.I usually refresh mine in Feb and July.
I clip my plots and road in May and a time or two during the summer.I spray them about a month before disking for the 1st time.I disk about a month before I'm ready to plant to get the ground broken.I then disk a couple of times before I plant.I plant in the middle of October before a rain if possible.I live where I hunt so I do this on my days off.I enjoy the work getting ready for season as much or more than the actual hunting.

We have 2 old telephone poles with a big piece of channel iron across the top.The iron is lag bolted to the poles.I have a small piece of chain holding up a pulley. We attached a boat trailer winch to one of the poles and have a gambrel on it.Its covered with a light and water right there.

Sounds like you are headed in the right direction.

Thanks a bunch. I'm the same. I enjoy prep work as much as anything. And we are setting this up just for our kids and their friends to hunt. No adults except to sit with their kid so I want it as productive, easy and safe as possible.
