I never understood this line of thinking.

It's like someone looking at a Mercedes at the dealership, and someone asks "what are you going to use it for?" and the guy says "well, I'm going to use it to drive to and from work, and I'll run errands with it, too, you know, normal car stuff." And the first guy responds "Why are you looking at a Mercedes then? I can definitely find you a Kia under $15K that would suit your needs."

Maybe he doesn't want a piece of shite laptop?

The flaw here is equating Mercedes with Apple and Kia with everything else and neglecting everything in between.

Let's stick to the car talk for a second. What's in a Mercedes that makes it better than a Kia? This should be very easy to answer. And yes, I'm setting you up.

Be less stupid.

I didn't associate Kia with "everything else." I specifically chose Kia because people were responding with "you should get something under $500." Under $500 is a cheap laptop, much like Kia is a cheap car.

"The parts inside are the same" rabble rabble. I know an Intel processor is an Intel processor and the engine in a Mercedes is not the engine in a Kia. That isn't the point. Aside from the internals, people buy a Mercedes for their luxury features, much like people buy an Apple for their luxury features. My entire point here is that even though both laptops will do what he wants them to do, he might prefer the slim profile, the aluminum chassis, the large trackpad, the sleek design, the superior OS, etc. of a MacBook. Are those not things to consider?

Friends and family always come to me and ask me what laptop they should buy. Nowadays pretty much any laptop is going to serve the needs of most people just fine, as long as you ignore the stupidly crappy low budget garbage. I always tell them that instead of comparing the processor speed and GPU, etc. to actually go into the store, look at the laptops, use the keyboard, see how it feels, does it feel like quality or cheap garbage? Most people aren't going to notice the difference between a 2.0GHz and 2.25GHz processor. But they will notice that their laptop's keyboard is crappy and cumbersome, yet they didn't focus on that when they made a decision. And in my opinion, those things matter a whole lot more.

I'm not even saying that this guy needs to get an Apple computer. It's just silly to purchase the cheapest thing possible just because it is capable of doing what you need. You said that I'm neglecting everything in between, but when did I say that he shouldn't get a $750 laptop? Which is obviously too cheap for a MacBook, but more quality than a sub-$500 cheap piece of shite?
