He isn't opting out unless he averages 22+ ppg to fool some team into giving him a max.

The only way he opts out is if the Pelicans extend him. That way he knows the money is guaranteed. Otherwise his agent will tell him to wait. The most obvious thing that might happen is he opts out, then the Pelicans sign and trade him (to a team Gordon chooses). But Gordon has the power. Opting out before he has a deal in hand would be foolish and the only team he can negotiate with is the Pelicans.

This isn't really true. If he can get multiple years at $10M, he may very well.
