Was 9 when I got mine - average height and build at that age. Hunted with 3 in #3 buckshot to kill my first deer - kicked pretty good on me but not enough to scare me away from the gun.

The lightest shotgun I found for an 8 year-old kid is the Mossberg .410 pump. I think it's called the Model 500 "Super Bantam."
It's lighter than any of the single shot crack-barrels I found, and it has a set of spacers to add to the butt of the gun (to accommodate kids as they grow).
We've had this gun for 18 months. It has done very well on sporting clays and crows.
