thermal recalibration
Now that's a term I haven't heard in many years.
How old is this drive?

Doesn't have to be old. I have a couple of 2 TB Hitachis from 2011 I use for backups in a dock that periodically perform lengthy cycles similar to what the OP has described. When I googled it years ago, people called it "thermal calibration" in several threads I found. My 7200 RPM WD 250 GB drives from 2007 also do this. The Greens do not, but they are 5400 RPM, and I have no idea about later, faster WD models.
