A friend in the San Fran area of Cali is looking for a decent rifle for deer and hogs, can I get some opinions?

First rifle and trying to be cost conscious so try not to break the bank.

I told him to spend more on optics than the rifle.

I agree with this, although I know some on here do not.

Tikka T3
Savage Axis
Ruger American
All decent budget end rifles.

Avoid the Remington 770. It is garbage.

I got myself a Rem 700 in .30-'06 last year...was at Cabela's, came with a 3-9x40 scope. $440. (Tax free weekend FTMFW)

Scope was perfectly fine for 100 yds, got a new scope as a gift before I ever tried shooting longer distance than that

LOL - Savage (accu trigger model) or HOWA .308. Vortex optics kind of negate the quote above - crossfire II in what ever magnification he would like. If he goes this route he will spend more on the gun and won't regret the vortex...

A 300 blackout. Best short range gun. Poor hogs and deer don't stand a chance. I have a nikon on mine.

If he wants to be cost conscious and get good use out of the gun I would recommend getting Tikka T3/Ruger American chambered in .308. Ammo is cheaper for messing around and still a good caliber to take down deer and hogs

I passed up a chance to buy a Savage Model 110 in 30-06 because I didn't want to drive an hour and a half to get it. Did I make a mistake?
