I don't want them to "fight ebola".

The sources said that eight engineers and logistical specialists from the Guard, both active-duty and reservists, would probably be included in the first deployment. They are expected to help build 17 Ebola treatment centers, with 100 beds apiece. The sources said that no decision had been made.

I have no problem with this as long as Liberia pays us back somehow.

Fantastic! We haven't seen a pandemic yet; just wait until these poor people come home sick. Yeah, our armed forces are now fighting ebola, glory be!

This has "really bad idea" written all over it.

We are taking a bunch of people out of civilian life, shipping them over to fight a disease with 70% mortality, then sending them home to their jobs and families.

Sounds like a really good way to spread Ebola across the entire US.

frick Africans!

God loves us, not them.

Also, we need to ensure the military only kills people. Saving lives is awful.

National Guard?

Why not the active duty military?

Like the one comment on the article says:
"Hey Obama, it is the National Guard, not the International Guard."

Why can't we just put the NG at the border?

Does the President have ultimate authority over the NG? I thought it was the Governor of each state?

My first reaction to this was "what in the actual frick"

Second reaction was "this is so goddamn stupid, there has to be an ulterior motive"

Thinking about it, perhaps the logic is if we can contain the outbreak there, we can help prevent it from spreading to someplace that matters. If that's not the logic, then I don't know what the point is. Sending troops over there to contract ebola to save people who think you can cure syphilis by eating dirt doesn't rank high on my humanitarian scale. If we just want to help people and spend money, there are plenty of shitty places right here in the US that can use it.
