or that of an opportunistic kill
Exactly. I don't think anyone will argue that a bear is a threat to a full grown deer, but a day old fawn is the definition of an opportunistic kill. The biologists were adamant bears have learned when deer drop fawns and only actively hunt them during this time when they're easy pickings. I don't think they're any worse than other predators in this regard, but again the point is we'll have to wait until the state allows us to control this particular predator, and it's going to lead to some landowners being more affected than others.

I really think this is much ado about nothin'. The bear population is growing, but not significantly enough that its going to cause a noticeable decline in the deer population. You want to protect your herd? Shoot every coyote and hog you see.

The conclusion the biologists arrived at was that it leads to less does needing to be taken, and it wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does have an effect on deer population
The post I was responding to said it would have a serious affect on deer population, which it will not. Sure, a few weak, ill or young may die but it will not seriously affect a deer population. We have both bear and deer in healthy populations on many small islands around here.

I agree, for the moment. Right now, I doubt bears even account for a fraction of fawn kills, but I don't have a whole lot of faith in the state to be able to keep accurate counts of populations and be pro-active about keeping numbers at a good uniform level. It may take 20 years, but I think it will be a noticable problem before we're legally allowed to manage them ourselves like yotes and hogs.
