Another vote for a Weber Kettle. It's what I started on and still use. Does everything I need it to. Low and slow to high heat.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I'm surprised to see so any recs for charcoal over gas. Would it make any difference if the beginner grilled is a female? I love to cook but have never been behind a grill. I have always wanted to learn so I think I'm about to have Santa Claus bring me a grill. I'm passionate about learning new things but I don't want to be in over my head.

Why would gender matter in re: grill? Can you strike a match? Then you can use a charcoal grill. Get a decent grilling cookbook and let 'er rip. The only restrictions are the ones you place on yourself (says this female owner of two green eggs).

Agree that charcoal is tastier than gas. (I use my oven's infrared broiler when others would use a gas grill.)
