I guess the same can be said with Saban.
He has the last 4 #1 classes.

At Michigan State he put up mediocre records of 6-6 and 7-5 and finally had one break through season at 9-2. So obviously he didn't have enough talent there.

He comes to LSU and loses to UAB and many LSU fans dismiss that now as him not having "his" talent recruited yet. He loses to a probation Alabama 31-0 at home in 2002. I guess he didn't have enough "talent" then either.

Finally he has the talent after a monster 2001 class and we win the title in 2003.

The point is that Saban didn't finally win because of smoke and mirrors. He won because he brought talent in.

Why does Miles get criticized for winning on talent but Saban doesn't?

yeah this is one of the dumbest things I see some talking about on this board

every consistently successful coach in history wins on talent

sure less talented teams can and will beat more talented teams, but on a consistent basis, talent wins the vast majority of times

just look at the recruiting rankings and they will line up with the top 10 teams most years

People complain about Miles because only one championship, and it was a while back. We want to stay relevant.

Miles doesn't get criticized for "winning on talent". Nobody in the world thinks you can consistently win at this level with poor talent.

It's always amazing to see LSU fans defend Miles by criticizing Saban's tenure at LSU. As if you just don't remember where the program was when Saban was hired vs where it was when Miles was hired.

Someone last night even had the gall to pretend that Les's 2 SEC/1 NC carry the same weight as Saban's, as if they don't realize that Saban did it in a 5 year tenure instead of Les's 10 year tenure.

I don't even like Saban, but it's just disingenuous to ignore context when talking about his time here vs Miles's time here.

Could be wrong, but I think the team had some good talent when he got here.

LSU fans are TOTALLY Saban-sessed.

It's like the hot ex-GF that they can't let go of, even after she goes on to be a Super Model and they are stuck at their old truck-driving job.

Holy shite. If you can't see that the great talent Saban puts on the field is consistently more focused, more disciplined and better prepared than the great talent Miles puts on the field you're blind, delusional, retarded, or all three. His teams have talent and great coaching. That's why he has four times as many NCs as Miles.

Since the 2011 season, Les Miles has done much less "winning" then Saban.

Please don't compare Miles to Saban. Saban has won 3 national titles in the last 5 seasons, this being the 6th (add in a 4th title while at LSU). While it's true that no matter how good of a coach you are, you have to have talent, it's also true that Nick Saban is by far >>>>> Les Miles.

As for Saban handcuffing his OC's, do you want to compare the qb numbers of LSU and Bama qb's since Jimbo Fisher left?

Because he can't manage a clock, won't throw over the middle, won't change the offensive game plan, won't force his defensive coordinator to change something, and can't communicate. Also looks comatose on the sidelines and if I have to lip read "what happened?" One more time with his hands in the air, I'll just give up.

Players almost universally praise Miles. That indicates to me that he does the things a head coach should, and does them well. Occasionally you hear from disgruntled players. Does anyone ever consider the fact that this likely says more about that players character than it does about Miles' coaching ability? And maybe that player's character is the reason they didn't accomplish what they wanted?

No people say Miles DOES NOT win with talent. He beats the cupcakes and scrapes by against the middle of the road teams. We have one two loss natty title in 10 years and have produced more NFL talent than anyone over that time. Miles has a losing reocrd against top 5 teams and only one game above .500 against top ten teams. He's a mediocre coach who can't keep players or develop them. Fact.
