ext Monday, federal employees and some lucky others will celebrate Columbus Day with a three-day weekend. But in Seattle and Minneapolis, Monday's holiday will be honoring the people on the other side of the New World discovery story.

As the Associated Press reports, the reinvented holiday—dubbed Indigenous People's Day—"celebrates the contributions and culture of Native Americans and the indigenous community" as well as "the rich history of people who have inhabited the area."

Seattle unanimously voted in favor of the change yesterday, but Minneapolis led the charge back in April. (Reuters adds, however, that Hawaii, Oregon and Alaska don't even recognize Columbus Day.) According to Time, those in favor of the switch in Minneapolis felt that it would paint a "'more accurate historical record' of Columbus's 1492 discovery." According to one activist quoted in Al Jazeera, it's a welcome departure from the long-standing celebrations of a "pirate."

Some Italian groups, on the other hand, say they are highly offended. "For decades, Italian-Americans celebrated not the man, but the symbol of Columbus Day," one Seattle native told the city council, as quoted in Reuters. "That symbol means we honor the legacy of our ancestors who immigrated to Seattle, overcame poverty, a language barrier, and above all, discrimination."

A compromise, those who oppose the switch say, would be to simply designate another day as Indigenous People's Day.

i am going to go a little zach on you.

one day drinking for st paddys day, we discussed how horribly offensive the car bomb is as a drink. We figured we need to create other offensive shots for different holidays. Columbus day was top on our lists. we created a drink called the smallpox blanket.

Apple Cider - represent the promise of america, and the raping of our lands.
Goldschlagger - represent both spices (cinnamon) and gold.
Whiskey Infused raisin - its the pox at the end.

its surprisingly good.

Whatever. In fifty years, Christmas will be called something douchey like "Oppressed Non-Christians Day."

Government workers shouldn't get the day off if they are refusing to call the holiday by its proper federal name.

Oh for the love of God. I blame liberal pussies and their pushing of everything "PC". What's it like to live in a perpetual state of fear of words?

Take the shitshow with the Washington Redskins. ESPN is falling all over themselves trying not to say the word "redskins". How is that offensive? Maybe if their mascot was an indian passed out in front of a truck stop casino, then i might understand a little outrage. Hell, there should be more outrage over the Cleveland Indians caricature rather than the Redskins emblem. And even then, if you are offended by that, maybe you should stab out your eyes and ears.

If words and images offend you to a degree you demand government interference, then you will NEVER make it in the real world.

Obviously there are relatively under-represented Italian-American populations in Seattle and Minneapolis.

So have they set the date for everybody in Seattle to move out?

How about all those Tech Firms and Boeing? Isn't Starbucks from there?

Because if they really want to do the "Indigenous Peoples" justice and atone for the sins of the Europeans who took the land from them, then every person of non-Indigenous Peoples descent should get the hell out of there.

And no selling of the land to the descendants of the Indigenous Peoples. You stole it, you return it.
No?

I didn't think so.
