The Oscar season now starts even earlier than it used to, and the first major contender is released this weekend in Gone Girl. Over the next few weeks Whiplash, Kill the Messenger, Fury, Birdman, and Nightcrawler will hit the theaters with Oscar buzz surrounding the films.
So before everything starts, what is your top 10 movies of the first 9 months of 2014?
I've only watched 55 movies so far this year, but Ive seen almost all of the big releases.

Really want to see Calvary. It's right up my alley as an Irish Catholic (mom was born there).
Saw Gone Girl. It deserves it, but I bet it gets screwed.

Would never put captain America there. Same formula as all the other comic movies. Thought transformers was better.

Damn, I wish I had time to catch all those films.
Right now, I'd say in no particular order
The Rover
Joe
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Chef
I'll stop there. In the next couple of weeks I should catch Calvary, Frank, Zero Theorem, and a few others.
I would love to put CA, Guardians and Edge of Tomorrow all in my top 10, but the film buff in me says no. Add Robocop to that which was surprisingly not bad.

Anyone who thinks capt America should win an Oscar must be trolling

Who says it should win an Oscar? The OP question only asks what are the 10 best films pre-Oscar-super-drama-times-season. Not "What 10 films should win an Oscar."
And anyways, if Crash (2006) can win an Oscar, Captain America can win an Oscar.
That's only partly a joke. I get your point, but "not great" movies win Oscars every single year. No one is saying Cap should win an Oscar though.

I don't believe we have fallen that much as a society to have a comic book movie as one of 10 best movies of the year
Not yet anyway

1978 was kind of a solid year, and I'd easily put Superman in the Top 10 films that year.
Remember, the Oscars are not really about the best achievement in film. Come down to earth, you can't write off an entire genre of film just because a few scrape the bottom of the barrel. Every genre has their major stinkers even "sure-fire" Oscar contenders.

I dont watch much tv, so if Im home with nothing to do, Ill find a movie online. Thats roughly one movie a week in a 9 month span. Out of my top 10, I only saw 3 in theaters.

I havent seen Rover or Joe. I heard bad things about Rover, so I havent given it a chance. Also, I dont think Ill watch Zero Theorem. Im really not a Gillam fan.
Cap and Guardians probably wont end up in my top 20. With the sheer number of high profile films coming out in the next three months, there's a great chance they will land somewhere in the mid 20s, unless its just an awful year for film.
