Why do people on The First 48 confess?

Been binge watching it since last night. Most of the time, the detectives don't have enough evidence to charge these idiots, and they have to get a confession. Then, the perps just end up confessing. If they just shut their mouths, they would probably walk a couple of months down the line, but instead they get to spend the rest of their lives in jail.
It seems like the only people who don't confess are the younger people and the career criminals. Middle-aged people always confess.
Are they just that dumb?
Is it guilt?
Are they trying to justify killing the other person?
Why wouldn't they just ask for a lawyer and shut their mouth?

They are idiots.
However, I saw one episode where two young men were obviously pros.
The cops separated them, of course, and started their interrogation.
The cops in one room were saying, "We you know you and your buddy killed him. He's going to roll over on you right now. He's going to get the deal."
The kid laughed and said, "Yeah right! That dude is a bitch! I bet you he is crying and begging for his mom right now!"
Sure enough, in the other room, the other dude would not stop crying and begging for his mom. He cried so loudly that the detectives could not get a single word in.
They were eventually released and the show said the case was still open.
If they did do it, they were brilliant about it.

psychology
always remember this: as humans, we have a strong desire to help and communicate with people
there is a science to getting a confession. these detectives have been trained in it

These people murder folks over like 40 bucks. They're probably not scared shitless of getting in trouble like normal people are.

It's called the Reid Technique, it's based on psychology, and it can extract confessions from people, whether they actually committed a crime or not. Never, ever talk to the police without a lawyer present, even if you did nothing wrong. LINK

I fricking love this show and i always have the same damn questions you are asking. Half the time, I think they are just that dumb that they get jedi mind fricked into confessing. Other times I think its just something thats a part of their culture and they nust dgaf.

I know the main Birmingham detective on pre-2013 episodes.

They tape a Bunche of cases and only show you the ones that confess / are solved. Would be boring TV to watch a guy asking for his lawyer.

It's like the first time you went to buy a car, except 100 times worse. You have no idea what to expect and they are pressuring the shite out of you for 8+ hours. Everything about the experience is designed to wear you out until you break down. If you are not prepared, they will get something out of you.
The retards that are murdering people are almost never prepared.
