So, did they know each other before this? If not, how did they end up at the same complex at the same time? West Ave is massive. That would be a crazy coincidence if they ran in to each other randomly on the 4th floor.
ETA: Just saw that the girls know each other and "a friend" of the victim lives there. It just seems like there's more to this story between the bar and the stabbing. Either way, the suspect is a coward and POS.

I believe Rusty Hardin is his defense attorney, so I would say he stands a much better chance at a lighter sentence.
