Was speaking with a guy who works at BREC & he mentioned that at Highland Road Park they are looking into putting a boat ramp into Bayou Manchac for kayaks, etc.. Has anyone done this in Manchac, how deep is it, any good fishing?

Highland road park boarders Fountain bayou, you would have to paddle a long way to reach bayou Manchac

BREC does have a Manchac bayou park across airline from the state fair grounds, maybe that's what he meant?

This guy has been solo clearing all of the bayous around Baton Rouge for the past few years.
There are maps of waterways, etc. on his blog.

He often takes Fountain/Manchac all the way out to the Amite near Fred's.

I have a friend that lives on Bayou Fountain, which is the waterway at Highland Road Park. From Highland Road Park, it is 4 miles to Bayou Manchac. This intersection is also near where Alligator Bayou and Bayou Manchac come together. My friend only navigates the bayous in a 12' flat w/ gator tail. Fishing is almost non-existent.
Bayou Fountain is a pretty tough area, mostly 15'-20' wide, very shallow, and easily blocked by downed trees and debris. Like said above, paddlebr has been trying to clean up the area for a couple of years. I have actually been meaning to join them.
This is Bayou Fountain and how clogged it can get (I can personally attest to that!): LINK
Manchac Park is 2.5 miles from intersection of Fountain and Manchac Bayou... making to total distance between the two parks 6.5 miles via water. I think right now, the popular alternate and clear just-for-fun paddling is via Ward Creek (launch behind PetSmart off Seigen)
I can safely say that recreational paddling & nature watching is about all you will get out of Fountain Bayou.

There's a boat ramp at Santa Maria that goes into Bayou Manchac.
