Should we punt the ball past our own 40?

On 4th and under 5?
With this defense to date, we shouldn't willingly give the ball back to the other team. 4th and 2 on the 42, Go for it everytime IMO.
4th and 3 on their 20. We'll get that over 50% of the time

Unless its your last gasp how could any team ever justify going for it on your own 40 every time?

Like Payton would ever run the ball on 3rd or 4th down

I know... sorry, lost my head there for a sec.

You get one shot for a running play. On 1st down you better pick up 10 yards plus then just head over to the sideline and have a sit. Maybe you will get to play again later.
Then we run some more short pass routes to our slowest most reliable receivers.
Surprises the other team every damn time.

The biggest surprise (and im hesitant to type this as we might get found out and ruin its amazing success thus far) is to pick up 4 or 5 on a rush on first down then come out in shotgun with a running back next to Brees. THen comes the shocker. Just when the whole defense is thinking it could be a run, we motion the running back out wide leaving an empty backfield. This confuses the hell out of every defense since no one has ever prepared for this or seen it before. The oline then trick the dline into running past them. Great trick. And Brees either gets sacked, hit while he throws, or rushed and throws an incompletion.
This is all to set up our trick play on third down. The thrid down trick is where we throw it to either Cooks or a RB well before the first down marker and usually before the LoS and get tackled setting up a 4th. Which is where the trick pays off. We punt. Thus lulling the defense into a false sense of security.

Sadly funny and terribly true

Funny!
Do you think when that bubble screen to Cooks call comes in everyone kind of groans like that scene in NECESSARY ROUGHNESS where Featherstone asks for the ball and swears he'll catch it this time?

Well I said 4th and short.

And I believe it is the correct call statistically too. I do statistical analytics as part of my job, so I'm interested in seeing the reasons to punt backed up with data.

Yes, we have the highest 3rd down conversion % in the NFL at 57.1%
On 3rd/4th and short, I would imagine that number is around 65%

Greg Easterbrook has written a bunch of great columns with excellent statistical analysis to back them up that argue that no team should ever punt from anywhere on the field... that you should always go for it. I don't know that it's right, but the stats are intriguing. Part of the issue is that coaches punt because then they can blame the Defense for not getting them the ball back. If they go for it and fail, it looks like their fault and the announcers say things like "well I don't agree with that call at all" and "why would you not punt there?"

I'm not even saying go that far.
I'm saying on 4th and 10, punt the ball. 4th and 1/2/3, go for it. Especially instead of kicking a field goal.
I honestly have little doubt that it is the right statistical call to make with our ability to convert 3rd downs.
It also means that our offense gets the ball more and doesn't have to sit on the sidelines for 8+ minutes

I imagine the success rate is relatively high because it's rarely done. The more you try it the more defenses will be prepared to stop it.

The article addresses that actually... the idea that success rate would go down as more teams start to do it.

What would make it different than a regular 3rd down play % wise?
If anything, given my scenario, the % should logically be higher than 57.1%. You would have to adjust this method for inside the 10 yard line. 4th and goal from the 2+ should probably be a field goal.
The longer field goal attempts have never made sense to me and 4th and short.
