Weekly Tiger Band Report:
Posted on 9/28/14 at 6:17 am
Posted on 9/28/14 at 6:17 am
After 4 weeks of Broadway, Park & Play, Repetition, and Brevity, The Golden Band From Tigerland rebounded from a string of "F's" with a solid "C".
--I'm all on board with the Journey music (if you young uns don't like it, you can get off my lawn).
--The Drill (first half of the show, at least), was a little more imaginative and well executed;
--Sound was damn strong.
--Band did not seem to be mic'd up this week. I like it better that way.
OK, guys, you've got three weeks to come up with a killer show for Kentucky and Ole Miss. Kentucky is Alumni Band weekend, so I realize the limitations that places on the show, but y'all can work on two shows. I've seen it. I've done it. YOU. CAN. DO. IT.!!!!!!

Didn't go to the game, but I'll take your word for it. Good news to hear.

From the tv it seemed like less piped in music and more band music than last week. Do I have that right?

wasn't in attendance this weekend but I was aggravated when I was in the TAF Tailgate Party last week and they told us they were redoing West Side Story AGAIN at half for Moo State...
I think Roy has made the band lazy and has really relied on "safe" music to play...I remember in '07 when they band played an amazing version of 'Don't Stop Believin' at Half and that was great!
Let's go back to those days, but if they were better last night then awesome! There is hope!

Way too generous of a grade.
First of all, after pregame, TGBFTL 's night began with the seven-year drum major calling for the first down cheer after an interception. This is not the first time this season she has whiffed on playing Chinese Bandits.
Great music. I like Journey. Jumping ahead from 1950s Broadway to 1980s rock was a stroke of genius. As for the drill itself, not so much. In two songs, the band moved a total of FIVE charts and stood still to play while the GGs danced. After standing still the entire time for the second song , they stood still for Calling Baton Rouge. Following that, the band formed LSU, and used the mystique of pregame for a cheap cheer from the crowd before marching straight off the field.
I'm sure there were some constraints because of the mass of cheerleaders that took the field afterwards, but don't kid yourself. The show was unimaginative, combined Journey and Garth Brooks in an odd pairing to say the least, and relied on the last two songs as crutches that the fans will cheer for because the real version of the former is played on the sound system to get the crowd pumped and the latter is pregame.
Absolute D-

Can they sit someone who knows football next to the drum major? I counted at least 4 times she guessed wrong on what down it was.

What a miserable frick you are.
Please do give us your suggestions for the songs that you would like to see played? I kinda thought the idea was to play songs that encourage positive fan reaction???

Not her fault. Also far from the first time this has happened with any drum major.

I enjoyed the show. Good music and the bands sound was outstanding. You could tell Roy has heard the criticism and put more effort into this show. Hope it continues.

You people were complaining about the usual taking "Hey Fighting Tigers" off the field. As far as I know they've never done pregame off the field, and I thought it was awesome. Y'all can never be pleased.

Did they play Journey with a Latin flair?

Who is at fault, then?

New person helping her. Does it really matter? People screw up and then learn from their mistakes.

So someone is near her helping with the downs?
Interception, straight into first down cheer, no Chinese bandits.
Several times the band played the second down song, but we gained the first down by a yard. Just because we catch a pass doesn't make it a first down. We caught a 9 yard pass, got the first down cheer, but it was 3rd and 1.
The band was smarter than the refs once. Third down play, afterwards the band played Bandits, but the refs marked a first down. Les Miles challenged the call and they moved the ball back and NMSU punted.

Of course it matters. These mistakes are far more frequent this year.
