From a historical perspective, Japan was a bunch of kamikaze assholes before 1945, hellbent on bringing down the west. 50 years later they couldn't be a friendlier bunch, actually adopting and on the forefront of many Western ideals.

To be fair, the Japanese were only parroting the west in the 30s. Most European (and to a lesser degree the US) grabbed territory through conquest throughout history. The Japanese were just jumping on that bandwagon...problem for them is...they waited too long and instead of joining the west as a colonial power we rejected the idea of territory through conquest and thus you got world war 2.
