I went to a Metallica Concert in Dallas once. The opening acts were Kid Rock and Korn and System of a Down. It was a bad arse show, except that James "wasn't feeling good" so he didn't come out. My first and only chance to see Metallica. And I didn't see the full band. We did get a good show, as Jonathan Davis and others (I think Aaron Lewis and the guy from Static X too) took over singing for James. So that made it a once ina lifetime concert, but still I never really got to see Metallica.
They actually had a make up concert in Dallas months later, but I couldn't do another road trip. The road trip alone was nuts, four people crammed in a mustang, drinking beer non stop the whole trip. Except for the B-team LSU cheerleader driving.

. Before the gig in Atlanta James Hetfield injured his back in a jet skiing accident and was forced to sit out three shows. Newsted sang most of the songs during these concerts, and the vocals and rhythm guitar were also taken by musicians from the supporting acts, such as Kid Rock and his guitarists Kenny Olson and Jason Krause, Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian of System of a Down, and Jonathan Davis of Korn.[2] [3][4] At the end of the tour Metallica played six make up shows, two for each show James missed.

Metallica still has it. They killed it at Voodoo the other year.

Cool, I was at that show (Dallas) as well. I went back for the make up show, and it was great. Much better venue than Texas stadium. Plus Corrosion of Conformity opened and put on a great set.
