So... to clarify:

I will be replacing BOTH a 1.5 ton system AND a 4 ton system.

The quote is American Standard (Trane) with a ten-year warranty.

Essentially, he is charging $2200 for the 1.5 ton and $5900 for the 4 ton.

Based on the evidence here in the thread, $5900 seems like a lot and the $2200 seems a bit low.

1.5 ton for the master bedroom/bath/closet and a 4 ton for the main house downstairs. The upstairs was replaced a few years ago, so I'm not replacing that.

My opinions were based on the above from your OP. So first step back and look at your envelope. Is the house tight, is it properly insulated, is your duct system tight, do you have good windows, etc. If that is the case then yes a higher efficiency system is right for you. If not get pricing on 13-14 S.E.E.R systems and save some money. Ask about the warranties. Be clear about the installers part of the warranty. Thier labor warranties are usually a year and wholly separate from the 10 year warranty from the manufacturer. Make certain they are supplying all the incidentals. Other than knowing a contractor who lets his guys moonlight you probably are getting a fair deal on a 2 system changeout.
