Technically, Blizzard never announced their long-in-development MMORPG Titan. It was always one of those big open secrets. And now, seven years later, the game is cancelled, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime tells Polygon.

We will likely see parts of it incorporated into future WoW xpacs (and probably already are with WoD).
Will be interesting to see if they make a new non-MMO IP based on the 7 years of work they did. I love Blizzard's existing IPs, but Starcraft came out in 1998 and they really haven't made a new IP since then (Hearthstone is just knock of MTG with a Warcraft theme and Heroes is just a knock of DotA with Blizzard characters).

I'm curious as to how much they actually did. With SC Ghost there was at least tangible product to look at. With Titan there was absolutely nothing. 2500 days supposedly in development, not one damn screenshot or concept art. For all we know the entire project was a prank.
It's in Blizzard's best interest anyway given the nature of the MMO market vs. 7 years ago. If there was any valuable IP developed, they can certainly reuse it going forward...then again considering all we saw of Titan over the last seven years, I question if there is anything.

Blizzard is quite honestly one of the more well known trolls in the gaming industry.
Right up there with Masahiro Sakurai, Ubisoft, and Ed Boon.
Not surprised by this at all.

There's a lot of speculation that Titan ended up turning into the groundwork for Destiny. I'm not surprised to see this come out.

They extended their MMORPG into the turn-based strategy card trading game that is Hearthstone.
They are creative and will use unrealized ideas elsewhere.

I can see that. Destiny definitely has that feel.

My honest opinion is that Titan is what we now know as Destiny. The descriptions are very similar, and Activision/Blizzard moved all Blizzard's developers off Titan around the same time Destiny production began. You don't just scrap 7 years of 100+ developers time to not release a game that was in playable form as of 2012.
Titan was said to be based on post apocalyptic earth, dealing with our solar system, it's history and future. A MMO that wasn't like anything on the market. Around the time Halo ODST came out, they announced that it would likely not be a sub based MMO. Seems reasonable that Activision, upon realizing that subscription mmo's were a thing of the past, decided to go a different direction while still maintaining the original focus of making a MMO unlike anything on the market.

I've had the urge to play an mmo lately

I think the mmo craze is over. I get the itch to play one every once in awhile and when I finally do play I can only get past a few levels.
The scopes of the games are too large and it comes with a sacrifice in quality of gameplay.
