I vote conservative because I am a realist:
1) Stealing every dime from the 'evil rich' won't stop people from making stupid decision like dropping out of school, doing drugs, committing crime, or just being lazy;
2) Just because something bad has ever happened in your life or you've "seen things when I was in the [fill in the blank]" doesn't mean God doesn't exist. After all, what makes YOU so damn special that bad things won't happen to you? So many people have a pussy attitude about God. "My dad got cancer, and that's when I quite believing in God." "My best friend committed suicide, and that's when I quit believing in God." It's such a pathetic excuse to stop wondering why any of us are here... for that matter why anything is here.
3) I believe in equal opportunities not equal outcomes;
4) I believe true personal charity is essential to both the humanity of the giver and receiver. It is our personal responsibility to care for the less fortunate. There is a fundamental difference between a Giver saying "I recognize your inherent dignity" and the Receiver saying, "someone recognizes my needs", vs. Government handouts that are pride stealing and soul impoverishing. "Here you go, boy. Now remember who to vote for."
5) Illegal immigration does not hurt me or any other white collar person I know. It does take jobs from the poorest of the poor. The guy sneaking across the border this afternoon won't take MY job. However, he very well might take the job of some legal US resident Hispanic-American on the Texas border busting his arse to raise his family of 5. But since the illegal will work for 1/2 the money and won't complain about bullshite working conditions, our legal friend is going to lose his job. So now we have both an illegal immigrant being taken advantage of, AND a legal resident now relying on the government for subsistence. That's wrong.
6) Illegal immigration (part 2): the legal Hispanic American knows that speaking English is part of his children's road to a better life. But since the illegal 25% of the kids in his children's classroom can't speak ANY English, it's easier to speak Spanish in the classroom... so our legal friend's children are screwed once again.
7) Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country, and it is a shooting gallery for minority teenagers. Nuff said.
8) Someone was abused or possibly even murdered for the little recreational drug you think is no big deal. bullshite me all you want, some very, very evil MF'ers were involved in getting you your little joint or little vile of blow.
9) Abortion is absolutely one of the most racist institutions in the world. The number of minority kids killed as a percentage of white kids is staggering. And while we're at it, don't tell me you believe in "inherent human dignity" and you're also Pro-Choice. You are either a liar or stupid.

I live outside of Austin where it's a little more conservative. What's amazing is all the liberals moving to Texas because their liberal state has: no jobs, or high crime, or high cost of living.
So they move to Texas... and vote liberal.
Stupid is what stupid does.

It obviously began with the beliefs of my parents, the principles I was raised on, and the belief that I was raised with. However, I formulated my own thoughts, beliefs, and ideas the more independent, educated, and life experiences I have attained.
I will say I haven't departed too far from that I grew up with, but I challenged myself on that I believe politically throughout my life.
I am challenged now more than ever because of the ineptness of those who proclaim to believe the way I do, but they truly do not. I must choose who I vote for very wisely and with a lot of research.
Unfortunately, some of my recent voting has been based on what and who I know I don't want in office. This year I am voting for the people who I can most identify with and if I find none, I will write in a candidate so I can say I voted.

Is it because it's what your family believes? What your religion believes?
The vast majority of people on this board and elsewhere believe what they believe purely out of the subconscious conditioning of their parents, family, religion, teachers during the ages of 0-6. Geographical birth on this planet pretty much determines what your worldview will be for the rest of your life. If you are born in India, you will be Hindu, the middle east, Muslim etc. Humans, however, deceive themselves into believing that they came to believe what they believe on their own. It is a huge mirage of the human condition. Experience is subjective depending on your personal upbringing.

Believe it or not I am actually a registered democrat. Didn't know any better when I registered at 18. For the most part I look at the individual and not the party. Especially in local elections. State and national elections I have always voted republican. Not because I particularly like the party but because for the most part their conservative beliefs are closer in line with mine. I wish a 3rd party would become viable in my lifetime but I just can't see it happening.

Why do you believe what you believe?
Growing up, I'd always thought of myself as "open-minded". But, in reality, I was just a default cultural Liberal. I knew about the "other side" from what Liberals told me about the "other side".
Once I started to actually be open minded and dig into other points of view, especially economics, I slowly but surely moved towards the libertarian pov.
Once I started my own business and had to deal w/ government rules, regs and taxes, the move towards libertarianism has been completed.

I remember as a youngster questioning the media hysteria over Reagan's joke about "We begin bombing in five minutes." In hindsight, it makes perfect sense. Manufactured outrage to drive a narrative and stereotype, which fuels your kind. I don't think you're brainwashed. I think you're intentionally dishonest for political gain.

The USA was founded on the principle of limited government, individual liberty and private property rights.

The thread title made me ask myself what it is that I believe, and the answer was "not much." Despite my demeanor here, I am not strong in any political or ideological convictions IRL. I've only been able to actually cast a vote for a candidate once in my life, and probably never will again. Guess I'm disloyal to my ideology when push comes to shove.
The opinions I do have are generally formed by the subjective and uncertain guiding principle of (something like): "which set of rules seems likely to shape the type of society in the long run that I deem best?"

Or did you come up with your own ideas as you got old enough to understand?
Ive gained more consideration for libertarian princinples from college, usually I was always in a dem/rep mindset. Also, gave me an opportunity to consider 3rd parties, but I also naturally disliked both D and Rs over the least few years.

A bit, my dad is slightly left-leaning. So I still kinda have those tendencies
