He would have done wonders at a school like Miss St. He is definitely the king of taking Juco players and getting them to buy in to his brand of football.

Only thing preventing him from being Top 10 is that he never won a national title. I remember one season they were undefeated going into the conference championship game, then lost. I really thought they were going to win it all that year.

i really think you can make the arguement that no coach in say the last 50 years has done to a program what he has done.
not only were they the worst 1-a football program when he got there, they were the worst athletic department, and if you read this link, the University was failing as a whole

South Carolina wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire when Spurrier took over.

Is that fair to him? If he had wanted to go to a bigger school I'm sure there were opportunities. He has a top 25 caliber program every year with kids who can't go to all (any?) the top 25 schools.

I know he does a ton of JUCO stuff as well, but he is a hell of a coach.

Why, realistically, should KSU have been in that game last night? In all honesty, they pissed away points multiple times (3 missed FGs and a dropped TD), and should be celebrating this morning. Some of those things are on a coaching staff, but he drew up a gameplan to help them win and stopped an offense few have in the previous 15 games (even further back from Cam's time)

true, but SC was nowhere near the dregs that K State was. They were the laughing stock of the Big VIII until Snyder took over.

SC at least had Lou Holtz before Spurrier.

true
but

By 1989 the school had become the first program in Division I-A (FBS) to lose 500 games, and had the worst overall record in the nation at 299–509–41.[

And, as much as I hate him, Nick Saban HAS to be right after Bear Bryant on that list.

And something that is interesting to me is that if Les Miles has another 10 years at LSU that match his first 10 years (a few SEC titles, 1 national title) he's easily in that top 10 list.

KSU won their 299th game as a program on October 18th, 1986, and then went winless until Snyder's first win in his first season on September 30th, 1989. They were 0-26-1 in their last 27 before he took over, and in 10 seasons, he had the Kansas State Wildcats 11-0 and #1 in the country.

Before this season Snyder had 187 wins in 22 seasons.

Starting back from 1988, the year before he took the job, you have to get back to mid 1926 to add up to 187 wins - that's 66 years. And 17 coaches.

A lot of their win total came EARLY in the history of football.

I see one back to back winning season by a coach before then. 1953-1954.

The program was pretty solid from the 1920s goin back. Charles Bachman had back-to-backs in '25&'26 and 3 in a row from 1921-1923.
Zora Clevenger had a winning season from 1916-1918. They also had 7 winning seasons in a row from 1906-1912.

I remember there was an SI story way back in the early 80s - how KSU redshirted the entire football team so they would have a crack at going to a bowl for the first time in their history or the first time in a very, very, very long time. They ended up going to the Independence Bowl. They were so bad in football they were talking about dropping out of the Big 8 -- only thing that kept them in the conference was that they had pretty solid basketball teams and they didn't want to lose that.

He's on a Top 5 list of 'program changers', without a doubt.

He's not a Top 20 all time coach, though. That's not a knock-- it is a simple acknowledgement that being pretty darn good for a long while, is not the same as winning multiple titles. It may be the closest KSU ever comes to winning a national title-- but it does not dim the success of others.

Certainly one of my favorite coaches, though.

I don't know where he ranks all time, but he's one of the best ever IMO. I don't know if that's top 5, top 10, top 20, but he's a damn good coach.

Going into last nights game, if you take away ties, Kansas State without Snyder was 316-530 which is approx. 37% winning pct.

With Snyder they were 180-90 which is approx. 67% winning pct.

Pretty impressive to me.

He might be a better motivator than program builder. They were pretty bad under Ron Price

I think he's a pretty good program builder.

K State has been terrible outside of the Bill Snyder eras.

At what point do we stop going almost 100 years into the past when listing top coaches.

Is it even the same game anymore?

He's easily one of the top20

He develops talent with 2 star kids and Jucos

He was pushed aside and told his type of coaching doesnt work, its old. Prince came in and shite the beds, Snyder had to come out of retirement with a roster that was not built for his offense or defense. He retooled took a few lean years and brought them back.

Very few coaches, all time could win with the talent he has won with.

Bowden is grossly overrated, he has a hot bed of talent within minutes of his School. KST does not.

Mike Bellotti should be in the mix. Rich Brooks started it but Mike built the Oregon program into something when they were a joke for years.
