More heat records were set around the globe last month, including Earth's hottest August.

May, June and August all set global heat records this year, according to meteorologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Meteorologists said Thursday that the average world temperature in August was 61.36 degrees Fahrenheit (16.35 degrees Celsius), breaking a record set in 1998.

August was especially hot in the Pacific and Indian oceans and Africa, but cooler in parts of the United States, Europe and Australia. NOAA records go back to 1880. The first three-quarters of 2014 are the third warmest on record. NOAA climate scientist Jake Crouch said there's a good chance that 2014 will end up as the hottest year ever. Nine of the 10 warmest Augusts on record have occurred since the year 2000. The world's oceans also set an all-time heat record for surface temperature last month, with August narrowly edging out the previous record set in June.

So it was hotter on the water where humans don't live and colder on land where they do live...

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Monday that last month's average global temperature was 61.2 degrees, which is 1.3 degrees higher than the 20th century average. It beat 2010's old record by one-twentieth of a degree.

At some point, people will begin pointing out the emperor has no clothes.

2 questions... Honest questions

quote:

Nine of the 10 warmest Augusts on record have occurred since the year 2000

1) What about the other months? Were the other months consistently higher or were they lower than average? Just wondering if it was consistent amongst all months or just Aug

2) If this is all record breaking heat, why is there more arctic ice than ever? Is it the "hot" places are getting hotter and the "cold" places are getting colder

My seranno peppers are doing great because our summer has been so cool. Normally, they would be dried out by Sept. Got a lot of pine straw falling down. The trees are expecting a cold winter...got about 200 on my property. Gonna try to put as much as I can into the compost pile for next Spring's garden.

The only thing I hate about Fall is that Zach cannot lay out and sunbathe.

It was cooler in every place where there is a majority of white people. Global warming is obviously racist

The messaging from the deniers is moving away from outright denial to bitching about taxes and asking inane questions.

LOL

Its hotter where there is absolutely no way to verify their data, yet where people track data they admit its been cooler

LOL

And the temps were SO MUCH HOTTER in the ocean, that it offset the much cooler land temps

LOL

And all this happened after they openly admitted, a) they switched from taking temps in the mornings to the afternoons b) they are "adjusting" the past data where they historically didn't have monitoring stations (which of course is the artic, Antarctic, and the oceans)

LOL

And of course those past ocean readings that don't exist, are cooler than the current readings

LOL

And people believe that crap

Footnotes:
quote:

The number of sea surface temperature observations in ICOADS has increased due to recent digitization

quote:

Existing data have well documented biases in them. The most important bias globally was the modification in measured sea surface temperatures associated with the change from ships throwing a bucket over the side, bringing some ocean water on deck, and putting a thermometer in it, to reading the thermometer in the engine coolant water intake.

quote:

The most important bias in the U.S. temperature record occurred with the systematic change in observing times from the afternoon, when it is warm, to morning, when it is cooler. This shift has resulted in a well documented increasing cool bias over the last several decades and is addressed by applying a correction to the data.
