The compliments are usually from females, my guy friends mostly think they look "gay", but they aren't known to have fashion sense.

Your guy friends are correct. If I wore those things my friends (male and female) would abandon me and think I had turned homo. I find that the only ones who think they look good are the college-aged/early 20ish crowd. When I'm out with my friends (in their 30s) and we drive through campus or are out at bars/restaurants and they see guys dressed like that, they are unanimous in saying how ridiculous they look. Especially the ones wearing all of that plus a pair of black socks. All of those guys look like they come off a cookie-cutter assembly line, no originality at all.
