As a northern transplant in the south, my observation is that you will likely be happiest with offense over a top notch goalie and defense.
That said, being in Houston I would assume you get all the Stars games so I would choose someone within the division so at least you will be able to see some of the games without going to a bar or getting center ice.
I would go Blues, Avs, Stars in that order. Star are up and coming but they are also getting old.

Eh? 8 players 25 or under including their projected top line. Only 3 players 35 or over. Not an old team at all.

I do think the stars are being wildly overrated by the media and the fancystats crowd. There are things to like about this team, but they are being treated like they have arrived after barely making the playoffs and then quickly exiting. Their blueline is pretty atrocious and shows no real signs of ever becoming even in the league's top half. They've got some nice forward lines, but I really do think this team tops out as an interesting squad that might pull an upset in the first round.
Besides, the West is so loaded, and it's hard to see the Stars going toe to toe with the Ducks and Sharks consistently, much less the Hawks, Blues, and Kings.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions and input. I plan on this being a lifelong commitment, so I truly appreciate the assistance.
I think it's a two-horse race, at this point, between the Blues and Blue Jackets.
The Blue Jackets are attractive because:
1. The franchise has only existed for 14 years, which would allow me to have a much more complete understanding of the team's history
2. The lack of accomplishments in their brief history makes them easy to root for and also means that every big accomplishment won't just be my first chance to experience it, but the first chance for the entire CBJ fanbase as well
3. Having fellow fans to talk to on here is certainly a positive (especially if they would be willing to help me get up to speed)
The reasons why I wouldn't go with the Blue Jackets are:
1. I can't say I'm a huge fan of their logo, color scheme, or jerseys
2. The more I think about it, the more the excessive use of Civil War references is off-putting (this has little to do with me being from the South)
3. Other than you fine CBJ fans, no one else has suggested the team
The Blues are attractive because:
1. I like their logo, color scheme, and jerseys
2. Despite their history of reasonable success, they've never won a Stanley Cup, which makes them easy to root for
3. They've been suggested a number of times
The reasons why I wouldn't go with the Blues are:
1. My dislike of the St. Louis Cardinals wouldn't fit in with most Blues fans, I'd imagine
2. They have nearly 50 years of history that won't be easy to appreciate or learn
If anyone has any further input concerning these two teams (or another, if you really think I'm making the wrong decision), speak now or forever hold your peace.
I intend on making a final decision by the end of tomorrow (I'm wanting to decide before the preseason starts).
Also:
I plan on getting Gamecenter Live, so this isn't a concern of mine.
