He was a useless piece of shite who used religion to manipulate people and gain undeserved power. It's okay to reject profit in favor of faith if it's sincere, but when he reveals that he's just a huckster who loves money just as much as anyone but doesn't want to work for it, he kind of needed to die.
To the above poster, I'm not sure that "capitalism and greed win." Eli is just a weaker, more spineless form of personal gain, one that doesn't risk itself as much, and he gets stomped on by pure, cold capitalism.

Doh! The theme is so similar to a Sinclair Lewis novel I got them mixed up. Though Sinclair was never as graphic as Upton. Never read Oil!, only The Jungle of Upton's works. Love Sinclair Lewis books.
