How is Florida a "traditional power" if they didn't start playing football until 1990?

How did they suck sooooo hard for 100 years, yet they still have a winning record over "traditional powers" such as LSU, F$U, Tennessee, etc etc??

So confused.....

You seem mad

This thread is interesting if you ask me, because you could make the case that many of the so called "traditional powerhouse" programs are already currently in a slump. Just take a look:

Records since 2010:
LINK

Michigan (34-21)
Penn State (34-20)
Texas (31-23)
Florida (32-21)
Tennessee (23-29)
USC (37-19)
Georgia (37-19)
Miami (31-22)

Some of these records are eye opening. If anything, college football is in need of a bounce back from the "traditional powers".

Meanhwhile "non traditional" powers since 2010:

Oregon (50-6)
N Illinois (49-10)
Boise St (45-10)
Oklahoma St (43-12)
Michigan St (43-12)
Clemson (41-15)
Baylor (41-16)
Louisville (40-16)
Texas AM (40-16)

At least back that up with some reasoning. LSU has supposedly been a "sinking ship" since Miles took over, yet every year they reload and are in the NC discussion.

Absolutely nothing suggests that LSU will be any worse over the next 5 years than they have been the previous 5 years. The current team is stocked full of 4 and 5 star freshman and sophomores. Next year they'll be ranked top 5 preseason easily.

I really don't see how someone can logically say they are nearing a decline.

They aren't a traditional powerhouse but I can see Oregon slipping in the next few years. I'm not sure their coach will be able to keep what Kelly had going more than a couple years.

You have to split up what we're talking about.

I can see Bama coming down from the peak, but I don't think they'll truly slump. They'll revert to being a competitive top 15ish program that just isn't necessarily close to winning the title every single year.

I don't see UF slumping for terribly long, nor UTA. Michigan, and most of the Big 10, are in a bad spot. I can see Michigan staying in UTK territory for a long time, although I expect there will be periodic returns to better performance. Long term, the Michigan has a good brand, but not a lot of other factors favor a return to the elite category.

I can see PSU never returning as an elite program. Tennessee too. I think Tennessee will be back to some extent, but I don't think they'll ever permanently stake a claim as being one of the top 3 programs in the conference again.

I don't see any other serious slumps for SEC programs, though of course some will crash and burn for various reasons from time to time. But the South is growing, the schools are becoming ever more attractive, so I just don't see the existential problems that Big 10 programs are confronting.

USC

Sanctions, Mora at UCLA reviving them, strong programs at Stanford and Oregon.

I do not see LSU declining anytime soon. Nor do I see Tennessee rising

From 2001-2007, LSU played and won BCS games in 4/7 seasons (including 2 titles).

You're cherry picking to make a point. In 3 of those seasons, LSU suffered a combined 7 SEC losses. They got insanely lucky to be in 2 of the BCS games. LSU's average record has not changed but with 5 top 10 teams in your own division, it requires quite a bit of luck to make a BCS game today.

Agreed.......unfortunately. Losing so much talent year after year will catch up to you. Plus, if and when Miles leaves (I think it's either this year or next), finding a suitable coach in short order would be a nightmare.

LSU can get a quality coach whenever Miles decides to hang it up. I don't think that'll be that huge of an issue.

What makes you think Miles is leaving this year or next?

On the surface it might seem like we are in for a decline but the team we have now is destined for a run in the next 3 years. Not to mention all the other talent miles has coming in.

Probably the eternal "Michigan will hire Miles" speculation.

Michigan is the only job I can see Miles taking, but I doubt that Michigan is willing to do what it takes to hire him for multiple reasons, including what Miles is making now at LSU and the rumored history between Miles and the Lloyd Carr faction at Michigan.

Miles would be a fool to take the Michigan job. That program will never be back to what it was no matter the coach.

LSU was 18-12-2 vs. UF until UF won 14 out of 15 during their dominant stretch...
