Seriously though, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine or The Hero and The Crown by Robin McKinley are both solid.

Check out The Lemonade War series. My daughter loved those books and it also helped her understand how some kids act at school.

Fathers of daughters have to stick together.

8 or 9 is also when my girls really got in to the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan. Male protagonist but the female characters are really smart, strong, and well represented.

Was actually coming to post that. They somewhat deal with more advanced issues than what I would think 8 year olds are capable of wrestling with, but what do I know? I was reading Narnia and LOTR and all sorts of other books by around that age and I turned out alright.

But I like the Percy Jackson books a lot because they are not only a pretty decent story with good strong characters, they also get kids interested in mythology, which is filled with good stuff.

Exactly! My 14 year, my 12 year old, and (let's be honest) Me, are all anxiously awaiting the release of Blood of Olympus next month.

Eta: They desperately need to stop attempting live action movies of these books! My daughter nailed it when she said they should get the folks who did Avatar: The Last Airbender to make feature length animated movies instead.

That's actually a good idea. The live action movies are mediocre at best.

The Percy Jackson books are brilliant, and the Avatar series are brilliant. A combination would therefore be amazing.

However, its a shame nobody can make a live action adaptation of either one work.

If they would just stop trying to make sure they "stay kid friendly" and just tell the stories, it would be a huge step in the right direction.

This is in no way directed at you, but this thought is what is fricking up tv shows and books directed at kids nowadays.

Back in the day, all of our shows (Doug, Hey Arnold, Narnia, LOTR, etc) were read by little kids with adult themes and they taugt you stuff you didnt know you were learning.

I starting reading the Hobbit to my kid and was surprised at how freely JRRT uses exclamation points. Made it harder to read Exclamation points for everything!

Yeah I hear you, I just don't know what's appropriate because, frankly, I can't remember when I read certain things. I was also highly advanced as a kid--Gifted, high IQ, high maturity, blah blah blah--so I don't know if my experiences necessarily translate to someone else.

Generally, I have found that the more "liberal" and "advanced" the United States becomes, the more we are sheltering our kids, whether it be from physical pain, emotional loss, death, love and the plethora of emotions that come with that, or otherwise. The US has a real issue with its idealization of childhood. It's hamstringing our development.

Brian Lumley does this in The Necroscope series to the point of distraction. It's the only knock on the series I can come up with.
