Would he be regarded as the GOAT? I don't remember Marino playing, but looking at the stats, his numbers are incredible. Considering the rules he played with, the shorter seasons also. Seems like he would've had some incredible seasons in today's game, no?

The NFL had already moved to a 16-game regular season schedule by the time he arrived in the league.

But yeah. He would dominate in today's NFL.

This reminds me of one of my favorite Ted Williams stories. He was being interviewed by a writer at Red Sox Spring Training, and the writer asked him how did he think he would do against today's pitching, and this was in the '90's?

Williams replied probably about .270.

The writer said you really think today's pitching is that much better?

And Williams said Hell no, but I'm 72 years old.

The year Marino threw for 4800 yards, he was 400 yards ahead of the second-place guy. His 48 TDs were 16 ahead of #2, 20 ahead of #3.

ETA I was referring to his record-setting year. Sorry about the 4800 number.

I've heard older heads say that Marino was the best they've ever seen

Marino was the most overrated QB ever. Easily my least favorite player.

When you consider the fact that the Dolphins never really had a run game at all when he was there or a consistently top tier defense, its pretty remarkable how well he did. Once Duper and Clayton were gone he basically was the Dolphins. He is probably the most gifted passer overall in the history of the game, but I think there are some guys over him due to the other things that make a QB great.

Likely. He is the best pure passer I have ever seen, including Peyton. He was the most accurate QB I ever have seen play.

Marino was drafted 5 yrs after the NFL went to 16 game seasons. But you're right, he could really throw it.
