What? My son's 2nd grade class does comparable analysis and critical thinking exercises every week. Now, their observations are arguments aren't what you would expect from a child in high school but the importance is on learning the process.

No, I'm sorry. 6th graders are not ready to have a fruitful discussion of the similarities/differences of George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler and how that applies to philosophy of government.

Do you think they even know what the Patriot Act is? Let alone be able to discuss it and it's implications for society and government?

I believe the first person who replied to me was correct. The only thing that is going to happen in that discussion is that the teacher's beliefs and opinions are going to be forced (intentionally or unintentionally) on the students.

My apologies. I read your post as they weren't ready for that type of critical thinking and complex discussions, in general, based upon the poster you responded to saying he appreciated the attempt for critical thinking exercises. I agree that this topic, specifically, is inappropriate for that age level.

Not a surprise, considering the source.

The more that Bush is demonized and vilified in the Zeitgeist of today's USA, the easier it is to blame Bush for all time to come.

The easier it is to Blame Bush, the easier it is to prop up your own Democrat POTUS because you can explain away ALL of his deficiencies by Blaming Bush.

It is VERY important to the Left to keep Demon Evil Bad Bush prominent in our Zeitgeist now and, if possible, forever. This political weapon the Left will wield with fervor. They will never willingly surrender this weapon.

This is the same/similar strategy applied by the Right against BHO. I wonder why to opposing political sides, run by a group of very intelligent individuals would choose to employ the same or similar strategies to sway peoples opinions......

That's unfortunate. Sorry you didn't learn how to develop your own opinions at a younger age.

In 6th grade you aren't developing your own opinions. You're regurgitating what your parents and teachers tell you. You don't really develop educated opinions until college, or if you're able, high school.

Especially in this day and age with multiple choice standardized testing. Students are being conditioned to just figure out what the "right" answers are so they can give that answer on the test.

Nor are they able to identify a teacher's über-partisan agenda, much less fend it off.

No, according to Spleen they're capable of critical thinking and forming their own educated opinions....while their mom picks them up from carpool.

at that age, they are MORE GUIDED BY Teacher's views than those of their own....
they do not have enough data and capabilities to sort and analyze this level of data
