Anyone remember the Kirby Smith banner the day Bear Bryant died? My personal favorite for tasteless.

Yeah, that doesn't mean "over". Regardless, frick this stupid society. DKE can mock multiple on-campus massacres (one against an opponent two weeks later) and a mass-shooting at a movie theater, but the second they mention a gay guy and a penis, everyone loses their goddamn minds. Just a wonderful microcosm of how backwards our society is. No one cares about gratuitous violence as long as there's sex stuff and "tolerance" stuff to worry about.
This right fricking here. While some of the DKE banners were funny (Like the one about Sam) some where downright disrespectful. The fact that the press and the university have made a bigger issue out of this banner than some of the ones they've hung in the past is a fricking joke.

And you want to get rid of the whole state of gumps? Am I missing something? You want to be a good little "Thought Policeman"? Is that it?

When we identify dissent (like this offensive banner) that opposes our new norms and orthodoxy, we must stigmatize those who are guilty of said speech crimes in any way we can. Until our Fundamental Orthodoxy has 100% public acceptance, we must use every weapon in our disposal to crush those who have a different perception of free speech, satire, parody and objective political inquiry. Shall we move FORWARD together?

I'm not in favor of censoring either.....this banner brings back fond memories of 1971 Homecoming vs. Bama......the DKE's had a long white banner draped across their front with a painting of a huge tampon doused in "red".....the scripting said....."Stop the Flow"!
I recall my mom and dad walking through fraternity row and viewing this - it was so stark and unbelievable, I'm not sure that my mom caught it...my dad, on the other hand, simply said "Honey, let's move along"!
Hilarious!

Referencing the Kent State shooting didn't cross the line too much, but talking about a gay man is taboo? I am more disappointed in DKE than LSU. DKE is getting soft.
From what I have been hearing, the driving force behind the apology is the older DKE alumni. (Yes the same ones that hung giant banners of spread eagled girls on the same house) LSU met with the house Monday and decided the house didn't actually do anything wrong, but the alumni were mad that we were getting on the university's nerves again after they all went to bat a few years ago to keep them from getting kicked off for good. There is a fair amount of tension between the actual active members of the house and over zealous alumni trying to dictate how the house is run.

frick deke. They have a long tradition of talking shite through these gameday signs, and when they get called out they back down like pussies. Grow some balls you front running douchebags.
J/k. I'm sure they tried to fight it.

Dissent from the prevailing Orthodoxy is dangerous. Very dangerous. Even sophomoric satire like a banner on a Frat house full of privileged white children.
Our orthodoxy DEMANDS tolerance. You must tolerate our Orthodoxy. Dissent of any kind from our Official Tolerant Orthodoxy must not be tolerated. Only through the proper acceptance of diversity that our tolerant Orthodoxy demands can you learn to be properly intolerant of improper dissent.

Serious question: Why were the campus gays and lesbians (Spectrum) offended by the banner? Why are gays/lesbians offended by all mention of what gay sex actually is?
I'm not saying there was anything wrong with the banner, but the "offensive" nature of it was due to portraying Sam Houston "getting the D" as a bad thing and comparing that to gays. I thought the banner was funny, but I could see how some may get offended if the intentions behind the banner were mean spirited.

If this chapter is teetering on the edge of getting kicked off campus...why would they push the envelope?

LSU doesn't own the house though and it didn't violate lsus code of conduct

If Deke made fun of someone who had cancer, they would have still been pressured into taking off their banners. They were simply complete dumbasses.

Agreed. The whim of The State is sacrosanct. Especially when there is evidence that the Speech in question dissents from prevailing norms. I've never been sure why people don't get that.

This is why I knew this was going to happen soon enough.
I dk how common this knowledge is, but for a long time DKE was the only fraternity that actually owned their property (thanks to Huey Long). Every other Fraternity "leases" their land for like $10/year from LSU, so that if they ever frick up LSU can kick them out of their house. So it used to be they could "suspend" DKE's charter and "kick them off campus", but in reality they couldn't make them leave their house, because they owned the property.
Well when DKE got their charter back this last time, one of the things they had to do was sell their property back to LSU, so now they have to play by the rules like the other fraternities or risk losing their house completely (like SAE did back in 2001).
So in the past when people got all bent out of shape about their signs they could just basically say frick off you can't do anything to us, now they could actually lose their house....
It does show our priorities as a country though that this sign is such a big deal but they didn't get in trouble for the one they had that said "This won't be the first time Virginia Tech has been massacred"
